Stainless steel fabrications have a long history in British history, and with good reason. Iron and steel have been used in making tools, weapons and components for thousands of years. From ancient times, blacksmiths understood that the properties of iron could be changed, for example by beating carbon into the surface with a hammer at high temperatures. However, stainless steel was not discovered until the end of the eighteenth century, when a French chemist discovered chromium. Soon after, British scientists learned that chromium can be added to iron to create a new type of steel. This was called ‘chromium steel’, and it was a scientific breakthrough because of the way that the new metal could withstand corrosion from acids.
Soon, many industries were making use of stainless steel fabrications, everything from construction through to swords and cannon. New techniques were developed, and by 1900 the metal that we would now know as stainless steel had been developed. The name stainless steel was given by the industrialist Harry Brearley, although he originally wanted to call it ‘rustless steel’ – a good label which says what it does.
One of the reasons that stainless steel is so popular is that it provides both strength and resistance to corrosion. This makes it a great choice where structural strength is required. It is also a good choice for use where the steel needs to resist corrosion from chemicals or the elements. It has natural resistance, without needing additional coatings, like galvanised steel.
Although stainless steel fabrications are useful in many instances, we also work in mild steel. Sometimes, mild steel is a better option. For example, mild steel is a good choice if greater ductility or malleability is required. Mild steel has a higher carbon content, and this makes it less brittle to impacts. At W T D Steel Metal Fabrications Ltd, we can help you decide whether stainless steel fabrications are the best choice for your component, or if an alternative would be more appropriate.
We provide a full bespoke design and manufacturing service. Many of our customers know what they need, but not how it should be made. If this sounds like you, do not worry. Our experienced team can learn your requirements and ensure that we fabricate a component that will meet your requirements, using the most appropriate materials and techniques.
